Local Arts Roundup: Gallery 9 set to reopen to public next month
The gallery’s regular hours will resume June 15: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.

In the meantime, in its final window exhibition, slated Monday through June 7, Gallery 9 will feature Roy Harrington’s photographs of landscapes from his trips to Utah.

“I’ve traveled through southern Utah many times on photographic trips,” he said. “Utah has so many very unusual rock formations that there’s an unlimited number of places to explore. The National Parks are numerous in Utah – Zion, Arches, Canyonlands – and each provides a different landscape created mostly by erosion.”

Beginning June 8, Mases’ colorful “Dreamscapes” will follow Harrington’s display, continuing with most of her original oil and acrylic pieces from March 2020, as well as several new additions.

“When I work in oil, my fascination of clouds fuels my work, but lately I have also been experimenting with a palette knife, painting different kinds of trees in acrylics,” Mases said. “This show is a mix of different ways I see the landscapes and seascapes around us. Some are truer to nature; others are more abstract. They are all created with a love of nature. They are all dreamscapes.”

Viewpoints displays ‘Super Bloom’

Viewpoints Gallery in downtown Los Altos features the exhibition “Super Bloom” this month, showcasing the work of painter Deborah Shea. A reception for the artist is scheduled 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

According to a Viewpoints write-up on the artist, Shea “transforms pure pigments of pastel powder into beautiful, vivid floral portraits. Her large-scale florals create spectacular focal points in any setting.”

“I am inspired by the natural world,” Shea said. “I love to capture all the beauty in flowers; exploring the abstract shapes, finding the path of light, creating transparency and building the luminous color of the flower centers and petals. Pastels have been my favorite medium since I was very young. Their wonderful, vibrant colors are my joy to share with others.”

Shea was born into a family of artists and grew up in San Francisco. She earned a bachelor’s degree in studio art and design at UC Davis, where she studied with Wayne Thiebaud and Roland Petersen. She had a career as a creative director, designer and illustrator before becoming a full-time fine artist in 2017. She has won numerous awards in juried group and solo exhibitions and teaches pastel workshops at Filoli and Pacific Art League.

Viewpoints Gallery is located at 315 State St. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
