State Street Market opens Tuesday
The long-awaited food stalls of State Street Market are set to open 11 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 7) for outdoor dining at 170 State St.. The market’s own food counters, operated by Bon Appetit Management Company, will open first next week, followed in the weeks and months to come by the chef-driven spaces El Alto, Bao Bei and a newly announced eatery, Little Blue Door.

A Cal-Indian endeavor from Srijith Gopinathan and Ayesha Thapar – the team behind Palo Alto’s Ettan – Little Blue Door is scheduled to open later this fall. Traci Des Jardins’ El Alto restaurant is projected to open on a similar schedule, and Meichih and Michael Kim’s Korean/Taiwanese stall Bao Bei is set to open in mid-September. Tin Pot Creamery, formerly of First Street, should debut late next week in its new corner location in the market. The cheesemaker Cowgirl Creamery is scheduled to open in late 2021.

Los Altos Community Investments, which developed the market, partnered with Bon Appetit’s culinary team leader Robbie Lewis (an alumnus of local restaurants including the Village Pub and Jardinière) to develop four areas within the market:

  • Murdoch’s, named for the local Prohibition-era Los Altos bootlegger Steven Murdoch, offers a full bar in addition to food like burgers and fries.
  • Ostro focuses on food from the sea ranging across oysters, crab, caviar and salmon.
  • Grains & Greens draws on local produce to make bowls and sandwiches.
  • Banks & Braes (named for a Scottish song) offers roasted meats and flatbreads.
The market will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. For now the market is open for outdear seating and emphasizing mobile ordering in addition to providing a substantial curbside pick-up/to-go order area in the back of the building.
